About

You know those promises you make to yourself when you are pregnant?  The ones that will make you the best mom in history?  My child won't touch sugar until she is one... My child won't watch TV until he's at least two... My child will sleep through the night at 6 weeks....  The promises that we make prior to meeting a perfect little person that comes pre-programmed with her own sweet personality.  I made LOTS of those promises, and Makenna quickly taught me we would do a lot of things her way.  Luckily, I understood that was just fine; and even though she watches tv, and loves fruit snacks- I'm still a pretty great mom.

But there was one promise I was just not willing to let go.  I promised I would read to my children every single day.  I did pretty well with it for awhile.  Even when Kenna was under a month old, I would lay her in my lap and read the Twilight series or Charlotte's Web out loud to her each day.  As she got older, she grew to love books the same way I do.  Reading with her was easy.  Keeping my promise was easy.

Then Laney came along.  With her own sweet personality.  A personality that didn't include the love of books her sister and I share.  For awhile I tried.  But slowly, somewhere, we stopped.  I didn't just stop reading with Laney, I stopped reading with Kenna as well.  It became too much of a battle- Laney would destroy books and scream in boredom each time I tried.

Several months went by, and while we would read with our two girls occasionally, it wasn't a daily activity in our home.  Late one night I came upon a news article encouraging the importance of reading.  It reminded me of the promise I had made while I was pregnant nearly 5 years earlier, and sparked the desire once again.

I'm now determined to read with my girls daily and to not let months slip by again.  I'm determined to find ways to make it interesting for Makenna and Laney.  This blog chronicles our activities, the books we read and why we do it.  I hope I can inspire other parents out there to open the world of books up to their children.
